The Chappe telegraph was one of the early long distance communication tool. It appeared immediately after the french revolution.
Messages were coded into digits and the translation process was already thought to optimise the send/receive rate. It is amazing that today, in our high technology society, we share the same concern about cryptology, power and bandwith.
The strong and tangible link between this device and the horizon convince me to build this chappe reproduction at his original scale. The addition of light give to him a spectral aspect. Also this is a surprisingly anthropomorphic object: it looks like a big headless human figure.
This close link with human body can also be seen in the way the telegraph works. Eyes and arm were amplified respectively by a telescope and hand cranks.
Messages sent by our telegraph come from an old register still preserved in the french postal museum. In order to use this material i spent one month decoding cryptic sign and old style handwriting. Then i copy everything into a database. Actually this is what drives the telegraph movement. I like the idea that a word written by someone 200 years before is still activating a machine today. Spectators are confronted to a mysterious forgotten object which try to communicate something. As if a one way door was opened between present and past thanks to an anachronous object.

Le télégraphe aérien de Claude Chappe, apparu peu après la révolution française, a été l'un des premiers dispositifs de communication à distance disposant d'une portée de plusieurs kilomètres. De part son attention à la cryptologie et au codage optimisé de l'information, cet appareil préfigure d'une certaine façon nos moyens de communication actuel.
Le lien extrêmement fort qu'entretenait ce dispositif avec l'horizon et le paysage m'a amené naturellement à concevoir cette réactivation à son échelle originale. L'ajout de lumière lui donne un caractère spectral. Il s'agit également d'un objet étonnamment anthropomorphique: une grande silhouette plaquée sur un horizon.
D'ailleurs on retrouve aussi ce lien direct avec le corps humain dans son fonctionnement originel. L'oeil et le bras y étaient amplifiés respectivement par une longue vue et des manivelles.
Quant aux messages diffusés par le télégraphe ils proviennent d'un des derniers registre ancien conservé au musée de la poste qui consigne par écrit les correspondances d'une année révolutionnaire. Le public se retrouve donc face à un objet oublié d'un passé pourtant encore proche dont les messages nous parviennent à nouveau. Un peu comme si on n'avait rétabli une connexion unilatérale, une porte à sens unique entre nos deux époques à travers un objet obstinément anachronique.
